the slammer  = jail

DA = district attorney

PD = public defender

a bullet = one year in jail

the pen = the penitentiary, prison

probation = "liberdade condicional" given instead of prison

(deputy) probation officer = the officer who supervises you on probation

parole = "liberdade condicional" given when a prisoner is released early from prison

parole agent = thge officer who superviseses you on parole

straight time = no probation or parole

bailiff = law enforcement officer in charge of security-safety-discipline within the courtroom, arrests defendants for whom the judge has issued a warrant

formal probation = you must report to a probation officer

informal/summary probation = you do not report to a probation officer, a violation of probation will be handled directly by the judge
