"Acquire" means "to obtain, get". I see it as a formal, "fancy" way to
say "to learn". The implication (I hope I am not confusing the reader)
sometimes is that something was learned without formal study. In that sense, it
is much like the expression "to pick up". The writer is merely saying in a verbose manner, "You must be able to communicate in the language before learning about it." What is so odd or remarkable about that? And that leads to something else. "Learning about a language" is not the same as "learning a language". "Learning about" implies learning the fine points, the subtle differences in definitions and grammar, the role of culture in the language, etc. Just my personal opinion... |
