Mensagem:  I'm not great at grammar but "there have been" seems to call for a plural direct object and "there has been" a singular direct object. I'm sure Pat, Elsa, Carmen, mjd or mrob can give the correct answer. "There have been a lot of robberies in the hotel district." "There has been a robbery at the Copacabana Palace Hotel." Simple?
