| Mensagem: | PAT, JOSE ROBERTO AND ANA MARIA, There's something you guys need to understand: Race is a socially constructed concept. Black (American) people come in all sizes color and shape. You see, American people who indentify themselves as BLACKS, see the term "Black" totally different than European-Americans and the rest of the world do. In their view, the term BLACK as a racial term is a microcosm term, in other words, anyone can be BLACK. For example, there are numerous amount of educated African-Americans with "white physical traits" such as prominent noses, pale skin, thin lips, straight hair, light eyes, and yet they are classified as Black. Why? Because they identify more with the African-American culture than with the European-American culture. So, Culture is the REAL thing. However, it is imperative that you keep this in mind, this rule rarely, if ever, applies to foreigners. It only applies to African-Americans. In your case, although you consider yourself as "white", in the eyes of Americans, they'd never see you as one. -Miguel Vieira P.S. By the way, Pat I suspect you grew up in an environment that is culturally homogeneous. This is not my case, my environments have always been culturally heterogeneous. So, if my suspicion is true, I can say that I am fairly more ENLIGHTENED about cultural psychology and politics than you are. |
