Mary's just stopped smoking. We stopped laughting when we realised that she was getting more and more angry with the situation. to stop + to-infinitive: É quando se explica o motivo de se ter parado. I stopped to drink some coffee (mas ainda assim, a ação que foi terminada não é explicitada, se fosse dito o motivo apareceria um verbo com -ing antes de "to drink": I stopped working to drink some coffee.) Mary was so anxious that she had to stop to think better on the situation. ---------------------------------------------- to regret + -ing: Quando nos arrependemos do que fizemos (mas já está feito) I regret asking them to leave so early, they would help us a lot! to regret + to-infinitive: Quando vamos fazer algo que não gostariamos de fazer (geralmente trazer más notícias) I regret to inform you that your application has been turned down. ---------------------------------------------- to mean + -ing: Quando dissemos que algo tem algo a mais como conseqüência. If we want to get there by 7:00, that means getting up before 5:00. You could see the doctor today but as you haven't got an appointment it would mean waiting for a while or long. to mean + to-infinitive: Quando nós intencionamos fazer (ou ter feito) algo. I meant to visit Ann last weekend. Here's the money I owe you. I meant giving it to you last week but it was impossible for me. ---------------------------------------------- to go on + -ing: quando algo ou alguém continua fazendo a mesma coisa que estava fazendo. Although she asked him to stop, he went on tapping his pen on the desk. We've tried hard to persuade her to stop, but she just goes on smoking 40 cigarretes a day. to go on + to-infinitive: Quando algo é feito depois que outra ação termina. After the a short break, Rush went on to play Tom sawyer. After studying Geography I went on to study History. ---------------------------------------------- to come + -ing: Quando alguém faz ou algo é feito de acordo com que fora previsto ou descrito. He came hurrying up the path. Yesterday, Tom was so late he came tearing downstairs, grabbed a cup of coffee and left. to come + to-infinitive: Quando se expressa sobre uma mudança gradual de opinião ou atitude. After days and days of talking and negociation our bosses came to accept our demands. After working with her fo so long, I came to admire her patience and efficiency. (Fonte: HEWINGS, Martin.
