Mensagem:  Dean, thanks for the tip about the "trava carneira". Everyone expects me to buy a new car, but I'll being buying something used, somethine manufactured in Brazil, something plain and not "flashy". There is also a simple technique used to protect a CD player that is used here. It won't stop a thief, but it will slow one down. It's not a good sensation to feel like an "alvo andante". I feel most uncomfortable in Rio and Sampa. I came close to being robbed at Tiete in Sampa. I had been speaking in English to an English instructor, and this (and probably my clothing) caught the attention of three robbers. I remained with the luggage while the teacher went into the station. Sometime after that, the robbers changed there mind and went elsewhere. When the instructor came back, a woman told us she had overheard their remarks. After that I bought a bicycle cable/lock. Whenever I would stop, I'd lock my bags to a fence, chair, railing, etc. No, it would not stop a thief. The purpose was to become an undesireable victim. I'll be living in the South, probably the Sierra Gaucha. No place is truly safe, but I certainly feel more comfortable there. If I'm robbed (and I assume that sooner or later I will be), my plan is to say, "Tom has all the money. Here's his address." Hey, it might work... I've driven in Brazil, and I'm aware of carjackers as well as thieves who will take anything they can through an open window. I've been in over a dozen Latin countries, and I've never felt in the others the sense of danger that comes over me in Brazil. Too bad. They say that paranoia is not a mental illness, merely a heightened sense of awareness. People really are trying to get you! I've lived in the same small mountain town in California for the past ten years. I lock my doors about once a year. I don't lock my car unless I go to the city. We had a bank robbery in November. I know one of the two robbers and his family. The arresting officer is a friend, a member of my Rotary Club. Oh, and I know one of the bank tellers.
