I never said "wanna" and "gonna" were slangs. But I wouldn't call them substandard English. They are ways to reproduce spoken English. It's ok to use them as long as you're aware that they're inadequate to more formal contexts. Not all foreigners are as naive as to think that the usage of "gonna" and "wanna" shows command of the language. I use them on MSN all the time and it's perfectly adequate to the purpose it serves. It has nothing to do with wanting to sound cool, fluent or proud.
People shouldn't be so paranoid about that. Not everything you write is supposed to sound like academic writing.
Recent studies show that the language used in chatrooms bears a lot more resemblance to spoken conversation than to actual written language.
In short, the usage of gonna, wanna and slangs is harmless "unless circumstance indicates otherwise." =)
