Jose, The British also call our version of football "American football". The only confusion for native speakers would be for an American in Britain or vica-versa. You probably know that American football is based on the British game of rugby. No doubt we Americans did not want to use the name "rugby" because we like to be different from the British. Our game of baseball is also loosely based on another British game - "cricket". Fortunately, we do have one sport that is entirely original - basketball! It is the best sport of all, in my opinion. Not all Americans play soccer, or football, or baseball, but almost any male American knows how to play basketball. |
