| Mensagem: | Lucia, Pat's reply was extremelly thoughtful. Classism is very real in America. As he pointed out, the use of "ain't" is seen by the bourgeois(Upper middle and upper class)people as low class. The middle-middle and working classes, however, are more liberal. As pat pointed, stimatized words and "wrong" usages of language by them come out when they either get angry or are under a significant amount of stress. Moreover, if they are very class conscious, that is, if they are very aware of class realities, they tend to be very careful not to use the "wrong" words or style of language. The higher classes, on the other hand, that don't even use the "wrong" words even unconsciously, are raised in very strict "bourgeios" environments. "Proper" English is expected AT ALL TIMES in such environments. No wonder their kids tend to be more rebelious.... What do you think? Is the relation between class and language the same in Brazil? -Miguel Vieira |
