Some more on Ireland / the Irish. About 20-30 years ago both Ireland and Portugal were the poorest in Europe. Nowadays Ireland is one of the richest countries in Europe. They really used the money well they were given by the European Community. Portugal got the same amount money and they still are one of the poorest. The Irish population is only 4 million and personally I think that the main reason for getting rich so quickly was because they speak English. That meant that high technology and IT industries flocked to Ireland taking advantage of the ( then) low wages and the language. The other thing is they stopped smoking in pubs etc and foreign capital ( USA) must have loved that too. |
