Of course, few of those 40 million "paddies" are pure-bloods - myself being a good example: irish-catholic from the potato famine; scots-irish protestant from an earlier migration; and miscellaneous french, english and german to boot.
The irish-german combo is especially common, with well over 80 million americans claiming one or t'other or both heritages.
