Here´s another thought; your fiancé should be encouraged to learn Portuguese. I´m not talking about studying ten minutes per day. I´m talking about a course that will have him fluent within as short of a period of time as possible. Sink or swim. Fish or cut bait.
I just returned from a trip to Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. In Buenos Aires I often spent time with friends in Lomas de Zamora. They have an American friend living in Curitiba who speaks neither Portuguese nor Spanish. He is married to an English speaking Brazilian. He cannot interact with other Brazilians, and he can´t interact with Spanish speakers either. Guess what? He isn´t happy. In fact, he´s probably going nuts. And why shouldn´t he? You can´t be your fiancé´s crutch. The more Portuguese he speaks, the more he will enjoy his stay in Brazil. And if he is happy, you will be happy too.
