To me one big risk of speaking a second language fast is the fact that you will not be using the right entonation and rhythm of the target language, even if you have the right pronunciation. The other common problem is to speak too low. We need to speak up.
It is always safer to speak slowly and after small sentences wait for some kind of feedback showing the other person can understand you.
