| Mensagem: | Maria Valeska That's a complicated issue, I've heard that some natives of English use the past participle meaning the past simple ('I seen a different world' or something of the sort that I heard in the film "The Thin Red Line".) Are we starting to write in the same way we speak? Have the advent of internet and the chats revolutionised the written language? Saussure in his Cours de Linguistique Générale explains that in the past the written language used to follow the spoken default, so in French they had: XI Century: (one would pronunce): rei, lei (and one would write): rei, lei. XIII Century: roi, loi ; roi,loi XIV Century: roè,loè ; roi,loi XIX CEntury: rwa,lwa ; roi,loi And Saussure goes on explaning that in the past the written language followed the spoken default, then from the XIII century the written language started standing still and the difference between writing and speaking has just increased. He says that within us, the written word tends to replace the spoken word. What do you think of this? José Roberto |
