My native speaker intuition thoroughly agrees with yours.

Future-wise, a statement such as "Se você abrir a porta, eu passo" obviously makes a lot more sense than, or appears as the only natural choice over, "Se você abre a porta..." One would probably use the latter form to express awe or uncertainty as to an impending action such as that of an unwanted, ferocious Rottweiller wanting to bite its way in at all costs as in "Se você abre a porta, aquele Rottweiler entrava e mordia todo mundo aqui."[1]

You and I and the entire forum could cite other examples.
