Mensagem:  Na minha opinião, a melhor tradução é encourage:

His coach encouraged him throughout the marathon race to keep on running.

One of the chief duties of a teacher is to encourage students.

Poverty often encourages crime.

Stimulate e motivate são opções boas também. Entretanto, nunca tinha ouvido incentive. Está no dicionário, mas não sei se é um termo comum.
