Bom, está obvio que was se refere a I, enquando were se refere a You. Pelo que sei "If I was you" é considerado "incorreto" mas é usado informalmente, enquanto o "If I were you" é o gramaticalmente correto. Basta lembra-nos que no portugues dizemos "tu vai?". A frase está "incorreta" mais é muito comum e "soa" melhor do que "tu vais?". Isso depende tambem do contexto e da cidade. Acho a gramatica importante como refetencia, mas a forma como eles usam é mais interessante.
