"I think you can get some TV series like Friends, King of the Queens,
Simpsons, Family guy. All those series you can learn a lot about the
American culture. I remember back then, watching an episode of Friends
when someone asked for quarter coins for laundry. I didn’t get the
joke but now I know most people need quarters for the laundry." Sid, this is exactly the kind of things found in the book I recommended. The quarter (25 cent coin) is so important in the USA. It can be used for telephone calls, to buy coffee or a sandwich from a machine, to get a newspaper, etc. You can never have too many quarters! Are you aware that Americans call 25 cents "two bits"? And 50 cents are "four bits" and 75 cents are "six bits". A dollar is never called "eight bits". So, if you hear "I wouldn't give two bits for your car", you know the guy doesn't like your taste in automobiles. I wish I'd had a book to explain "meia" and "bilhete inteiro" to me. rsrsrs But we have our own version of "meia". When saying a telephone number, the numeral "0" is often given the name of the letter "O". So, the numbers 4680 are given as "four, six, eight, oh" and not "four, six, eight, zero". I believe the Brits would say "zed" for "zero". |
