When I started back in 1999 it was really such a pain for me because we did not have easy and cheap access to internet, I didn't have money to buy good books and dictionaries, and I was really green to teaching and to the nuances of the language, so many things simply past slip. Nowadays with the popularisation of the internet when we can get pictures, the pronunciation of words, thesaurus I think our task as teacher has become easier (and we have to be much more precise in doing our research to answer students' questions!!!). I guess the rule of the thumb would go like "I don't know or I'm not quite sure now, I'll come up with the answer next class". A real example, once I was asked how to say carrapato in English, I said I didn't know and that I would go for it during the break, and so I did, I went to Wikipedia in Portuguese and put the word carrapato, then there was an article in English about it, when I clicked in English I got the word tick.
