Literally, a "lightning rod" (or "lightning conductor") is a metal rod on top of a building that is connected to the ground through a wire. A lightning rod is designed to protect the building from lightnings. The Portuguese translation is "para-raios". In some contexts, the expression "lightning rod" may be used to describe a person who attracts a lot of criticism, making other people less criticized. In other words, this person attracts the attention of all the critics, just like a lightning rod attracts lightnings. |
